Got some baked or grilled salmon? Then, make the topping for this leftover salmon tortilla pizza and enjoy the pizza for dinner tonight! Ready in around 10-15 minutes, this quick and easy meal is super tasty and the most wonderful effortless recipe you can make with leftover salmon.
Admittedly, you can use whatever type of crust you want to make the white sauce salmon pizza. I went for the tortilla because that’s what I had and I loved the convenience of it. Can’t deny I love a mouthwatering dinner that I can prep in a flash and I’m willing to take all the shortcuts to make it happen. Even if those shortcuts involve ready-made tortillas. I’m past the days when I felt the need to cook everything from scratch!
Whatever you decide to use as a base you’ll love the salmon-based pizza topping – it’s wonderfully flavorful, creamy, and cheesy and if you’re a fan of salmon, I’m pretty sure you’ll love it!
What’s In The Leftover Salmon Pizza Topping
The white sauce pizza topping with salmon is SO easy to make, you wouldn’t even believe it! All you need to do is put these ingredients together in a bowl:
Leftover Salmon. You can use any, ANY type of cooked salmon to make the topping. I had some baked salmon, but grilled, pan-seared, boiled, canned or even smoked will work as well. Whatever you have – use it in this recipe.
Cream cheese or Mascarpone. That’s the base for the creamy white sauce! You can also use creme fraiche or even full-fat sour cream.
Vegetables. I love adding vegetables to pizzas, especially when they’re made with white sauce. I used some of my go-to’s here – spinach, cooked broccoli, cherry tomatoes and garlic.
Capers. There are very few occasions I’m willing to use capers and making a fish-based dish like this one, is one of them. The capers add a nice saltiness to the tortilla pizza topping and go wonderfully here. That being said, if you don’t like capers, you can also use olives or add salt to taste to the salmon topping after you’ve added all other ingredients.
Cheeses and herbs. Add some Parmesan cheese, oregano and basil to the sauce and top the entire thing with mozzarella. Can’t go wrong with those.
How To Make Leftover Salmon Tortilla Pizza With White Sauce
Alright, I hope you now got all the ingredients out, because it’s time to make this fantastic white sauce tortilla pizza with salmon. And it’s going to go really fast, so it’s best to have everything ready to go.
To make the white salmon pizza sauce, all you need to do is put the topping ingredients into a bowl and mix them together. Start by flaking the salmon, or you can cut it up. I find it easier to grab a fork and roughly flake it.
Add it to a bowl along with the other ingredients – all except for the cherry tomatoes. So that’s Parmesan cheese, garlic, cream cheese, oregano, spinach, cooked broccoli and capers.
Give the ingredients a good mix until all are combined. I actually had to add a tablespoon of water in order to get a good mixture. Add salt and pepper, give it a taste and adjust once more for salt and pepper.
Preheat the oven to 200C/400F.
Once the salmon topping is ready, spread it evenly over the tortilla.
Then top everything with some shredded mozzarella cheese and cherry tomatoes.
Line the oven rack with parchment paper and place the tortilla pizza on it. Then insert the rack the middle of the oven and bake for about 3-4 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
Your quick and easy white sauce salmon pizza is ready, so slice and enjoy immediately!
Options
Now, when it comes to this pizza, and tortilla pizza in general there are many options you can go with.
You can definitely change the vegetables in the topping to use up whatever you have. Got some kale or cauliflower? You can use it in the sauce too. Don’t have mascarpone? Use cream cheese or creme fraiche. When it comes to toppings, the sky is the limit here.
Leftover Salmon Mixture Isn’t Just For Pizza
Another thing you can try with this easy dinner recipe is to turn it into wraps or even quesadillas.
To make quesadillas, prep the leftover salmon mixture the same way as described for the pizza. Then, instead of spreading the sauce over a the whole tortilla, spread over half. Next, top that half with cheese and tomato slices, fold the tortilla in half and toast in a skillet on the stove on both sides until golden brown.
To make salmon wraps, place the leftover salmon and cream cheese mix in the middle of a tortilla, top with cheese, then wrap like a burrito. Toast on both sides until golden brown in a skillet on the stove.
