Plums, plums, plums! All I’ve been thinking about for the last week. Now I found another way to use this delicious sweet and super healthy fruit: make a healthier plum crumble with oats. It’s super easy and it’s so good.
Seriously! You can make this easy plum crumble recipe to have for dessert with some ice cream, or even for breakfast with milk and some coffee or tea.
I baked it into, well, kinda like a pie or plum crumble bars, but you can also just put the plums on the bottom and top with the oat crumble. Either way, it will be delicious!

Yes, it’s fun, at least to me. I made the crumble with my five-year-old and he was just so happy and kept nibbling on the plums and the raw crumble (no eggs in there so I wasn’t freaking out and yelling like a crazy person). Yes, it was super stressful. Especially when he decided he will stone the plums with a KNIFE. But also, so cute and rewarding and so so worth it! Wouldn’t have it any other way.
Healthy Plum Crumble Ingredients
Oats. Rolled or quick oats are great! They’re healthy, versatile and very easy to use in baking recipes. We’ll use a food processor or a blender to turn the oats into flour. Make sure your oats are gluten-free if you’re on a gluten-free diet.
Plums. Choose ripe, sweet plums for this crumble. Any variety or color you have available to you will work for this recipe.
Coconut oil. Coconut oil is absolutely necessary to make the plum crumble. Otherwise, the result will not be crumbly…You can also use butter, but I had a lot of coconut oil, so that’s what I used.
Cinnamon. I love cinnamon with plums, but feel free to omit if it’s not for you. You can also use vanilla here.
Almond flour. Fine almond flour, together with ground oats and coconut oil make great crumbly texture, kinda like shortbread. I already made a recipe for shortbread cookies using both and it was my obsession for a long, long time.
How To Make Plum Crumble With Oats
Start with the plums. Wash them, cut them in halves, stone them, then cut once more, so that they’re in quarters. Then put them into a pan with cinnamon and coconut oil. Heat up for 5 minutes, stir, so that they’re covered with cinnamon.
Now leave the plums alone, because it’s time to make some oat flour in your blender (or food processor). You can also use coffee or nut grinder to make a more fine oat flour.
Mix that oat flour with almond flour, maple syrup and coconut oil until you get a crumbly dough that would stick together. You can also add a tablespoon or so of water, but do not overdo it, because the result will not be crumbly. It will just have a different texture.
Preheat your oven to 180C/350F.
If you want to make it into a pie or crumble bars, like I did, line a small baking pan with parchment paper then spread half of the oat dough over the pan. Press with your hands from the middle to the sides. Reserve the other half of the dough for the topping. If you’re just wanting the crumble – skip this step.
Next spread the plums all over the pan / the crust.
Then top with the crumble dough, pressing the dough between your fingers to make crumbles of the size you desire.
Place the pan into the oven and bake at 180C or 350F until the plum crumble is golden-brown. It took me around 30 minutes, but as you might know, ovens are different, so it might take yours a little bit less or more time.
The crumble with plums is ready!
How To Serve
In my opinion (said the person who made the recipe) this plum crumble is amazing as it is. However! You can make it even BETTER with some simple additions and adjustments:
- heat up in the oven before serving for best results
- serve with vanilla ice cream for dessert
- serve with your favorite milk of choice
- optionally you can also drizzle some peanut or almond butter on top
My favorite way to enjoy this plum dessert is, to the surprise to nobody, hot with a little bit of simple vanilla ice cream on top. It is so tasty!
How To Store
Keep the crumble in the fridge for 3-4 days in an airtight container.
This recipe will probably also freeze well, but I haven’t had the chance to test it yet! As mentioned, don’t forget to heat up before serving.
Is This Plum Crumble Healthy?
This plum recipe is way healthier than regular desserts made with plums. There’s a lot less sugar and a lot more fruit in it. The crust is also made without refined flour and instead with fiber-rich oats.
The crumble is vegan, gluten free and dairy-free.

- 2 cups plums
- 1 1/2 cups oats, ground
- 1 1/2 cups almond flour
- 7 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 3-4 tbsp maple syrup
- 1-2 tbsp water
- Mix plums with one tablespoon of melted coconut oil and cinnamon. Cook in a nonstick pan, stirring and occasionally pressing the plums with a spatula for 5 minutes at medium-high. Remove from heat after the 5 minutes.
- To a bowl add maple syrup, coconut oil, ground oats, almond flour, a pinch of salt and the water. Mix and knead to get a crumbly dough.
- Preheat the oven to 190C/ 350 F.
- If you want to make bars, spread about half of the dough over a small baking pan lined with parchment paper, pressing and flattening the dough.
- Spread the plums over the dough, then add another layer of crumble on top. If you wish to make it even simpler, you can skip the crust (bottom oats layer) and add more plums to the filling.
- Bake for 30 minutes or for however long it takes your oven to make the crumble golden brown.
- Serve warm with ice cream on top or with some milk of choice for breakfast.
